Many people find they entertain a lot more in the summer months – hosting a casual barbecue seems a lot easier than a formal dinner party, and it's always fun.
Today, the concept of a barbecue in the backyard has grown. It's not so much about cooking steaks over hot coals, as it is about preparing and cooking entire meals in an outdoor kitchen that puts everything at your fingertips.
Today, the concept of a barbecue in the backyard has grown. It's not so much about cooking steaks over hot coals, as it is about preparing and cooking entire meals in an outdoor kitchen that puts everything at your fingertips.
Architectural designer Jason Saunders and interior designer Nicole Tollman of Arc Seven 1 incorporated an outdoor kitchen into the design of this new house. Effectively, the kitchen is an extension of the main kitchen and family living area. Bifold doors open up the entire rear of the house to provide an easy flow between the interior and the outdoor kitchen area. "The owners do a lot of entertaining, and the design needed to cater to this," says Saunders. "The house overlooks the beach, so we also needed to make the most of the view. But we had to take into account the strong afternoon sea breeze off the ocean. Consequently, the second kitchen and pool are semi-enclosed behind a wall of glass louvre windows on the ocean side, but they are fully open to a walled courtyard on the opposite side of the house."
Quarter-cut American walnut cabinets enclose the work area in the main kitchen. Panels with negative detailing add a graphic element to the outside of a corner scullery and the front of the cabinets facing the family and dining rooms. The cabinetry is paired with Quantum quartz benchtops in Coral Reef. "The kitchen includes an extra-large 1200mm-wide oven with a teppanyaki plate, and a custom-built rangehood," says Tollman. "Everything is positioned right where it is needed. We also ensured there are several workstations, so more than one person can work in the kitchen at the same time. There is a special area, for example, where the teenagers can prepare their breakfast, and home office facilities are provided within another cabinet."
Low-maintenance materials were a priority for the outdoor kitchen, which is subjected to salt-laden ocean breezes. Here, the benchtops and trim around the cedar cabinets are in stainless steel. Other special features of this kitchen include a wine refrigerator, dishwasher, sink and a pizza oven. Wood for the fire is stored within the base. For uniformity, the ceilings above the outdoor kitchen and pool area are lined with timber. Timber floors and decking also enhance the visual connection between inside and out. -
